Before Toto was formed The members of the band performed sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 following the collaboration.
Toto's third album, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their earlier efforts and was criticized for the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left The band held auditions to choose a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by scouring through old tapes and demos to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans and Toto embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun The drummer Leland Sklar departed from the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live set called Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.

Toto was created after Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Keyboardist Paich was regular on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
In 1998, Toto began working on an album called Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks and several completed recordings of songs from the past. The album became a huge hit and the band toured on tours to promote it.

The album was released on November 6, 2018 and included three songs from the forthcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, and also completed recordings of four other older tracks with Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album included an original cover version of Weezer's track "Hash Pipe," which they added after hearing it on the radio.
